Who Is at Risk

Silica Dust Is a Hidden Hazard

Crystalline silica is found in stone, sand, concrete, brick, and many other building materials. Cutting, grinding, sanding, polishing, or blasting those materials releases dust fine enough to reach deep into the lungs. Most workers were never told how dangerous that dust could be.

Engineered Stone, Hidden Danger

Often sold as quartz countertops, engineered stone can contain more than 90 percent crystalline silica, far more than most natural stone. Public health officials have reported serious cases of silicosis among fabrication workers, including workers who are still relatively young.

You may be at risk if you have worked in:

  • Countertop fabrication and installation
  • Stone cutting, masonry, and tile work
  • Sandblasting and abrasive blasting
  • Foundries and metal casting
  • Mining, quarrying, and tunneling
  • Construction, concrete cutting, and demolition
  • Glass, ceramics, and pottery manufacturing
  • Hydraulic fracturing and frac sand operations

Understanding the Disease

What Is Silicosis?

Silicosis is a permanent lung disease caused by breathing crystalline silica dust. The dust scars the lungs, and over time the scarring makes it harder to breathe. There is no cure.

Symptoms can take years to appear, but heavy exposure can cause disease much sooner. Silica exposure is also linked to lung cancer, COPD, kidney disease, tuberculosis, and autoimmune diseases such as scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, and lupus.

Common Symptoms

  • Shortness of breath, especially with activity
  • A cough that will not go away
  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Chest pain or tightness
  • Unexplained weight loss

This information is general in nature and is not medical advice. If you have symptoms, please see a doctor.

How We Help

Your Story Is Where Our Work Begins

Wallace Miller is a Chicago-based plaintiffs’ firm representing people harmed by negligence, dangerous products, and toxic exposures. In a silica case, we start by learning where you worked, what materials you handled, and who made and sold them. Companies that make and sell silica products can be held responsible when they fail to warn the people who work with them.
